Sometimes, installing a radiator can seem like a difficult task, but with the right tools, it’s an easy task, especially if you love to do things on your own already. Whether you’re replacing an old radiator or installing a new one, they follow the same process and are easy to do if you follow the right steps. This article will provide a step-by-step guide on how to install a radiator, ensuring your home stays warm and cosy.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need:

  • New radiator
  • Adjustable spanner or wrench
  • Pipe cutter
  • Radiator valves (if replacing them)
  • Wall brackets
  • Measuring tape
  • Screwdriver
  • Drill and wall plugs
  • Level
  • A bucket or tray for draining water
  • Radiator key for bleeding the system

Step 1. Turn Off the Heating System

The first step is to turn off your heating system and ensure it has cooled down to avoid burns or injuries. Also, turn off the water supply to prevent leaks while you work.

Step 2: Drain the Existing Radiator

If you’re replacing an old radiator, you’ll need to drain it before removing it. Place a bucket or tray under the radiator valve to hold any water that may spill out. Loosen the nuts on the valve with a spanner and open the valve gently to release the water. This process may take a few minutes, so exercise patience. After draining the water, remove the nuts and lift the radiator off its wall brackets.

Step 3: Prepare the Pipework

If you’re installing a radiator in a new location, you need to adjust the pipe work so that the water supply and return lines properly align with the new radiator. Use a pipe cutter to trim excess piping and ensure you leave the ends clean and smooth.

Step 4: Install the Wall Brackets

Your new radiator will come with wall brackets that need to be attached to the wall. Use a level and measuring tape to ensure the radiator is positioned correctly otherwise it can lead to poor water flow. Once you’ve positioned the brackets, use a drill to hold it securely in the wall with screws.

Step 5: Fit the Radiator

After installing the brackets, lift the radiator onto them and secure it. Make sure the radiator is placed properly, then proceed to attach the radiator valves to the water supply and return pipes.

Step 6: Refill the System

Now that the radiator is in place, refill your heating system. Open the radiator valves to allow water to flow back into the radiator.

Step 7: Bleed the Radiator

Sometimes air can get trapped inside the radiator, preventing it from heating up properly. To remove this air, use a radiator key to open the bleed valve at the top of the radiator. Turn the key slowly, and you’ll hear a hissing sound as the air escapes. Close the valve as soon as water starts to flow from it.

Step 8: Test the Radiator

Finally, turn on the heating system and ensure the radiator is heating up. Check for leaks and make necessary adjustments.
